HOTEL INSIDER: Montpelier Plantation & Beach, Nevis
The charm of old world Caribbean meets the splendour of a Relais & Chateaux property at Montpelier Plantation and Beach on the Caribbean island of Nevis. Its history, which dates back to the 17th century, is celebrated in the details and the restored elements that give the resort its panache, while the lush surroundings are a constant reminder that you’ve escaped to a lovely slice of paradise.
DESTINATION: NEVIS ??
St. Kitts’ tinier counterpart, Nevis, is a bite-sized island that’s easy to explore. It’s a Caribbean destination that blends a unique, rich history with the relaxation of a beach getaway. Spend a day off-roading and exploring the ruins of plantations that dot the island, or hit the beach for a day at an iconic beach bar for a quintessential Caribbean experience. Its mountainous topography means that you can start the day with a jungle hike and end it with a beach BBQ, blending the best of many worlds into a single island escape.
Nevis has one of the longest histories in the Caribbean and the British influence is still noticeably felt on the island, in part due to its largely British tourist base. Like the island itself, Montpelier Plantation has a slightly more polished feel than some of Caribbean neighbors, with guests getting dressed up in blazers and shifts for the evening cocktail soirée.The rooms (we stayed in a Premier Room) are lovely, though somewhat modestly decorated. The common spaces are the stars, with a dimly lit old-world lobby, cozy sitting spaces with hidden nooks, and lovely outdoor bar for a daytime drink.
As a Relais & Chateaux property, it’s no surprise that the dining at Montpelier is designed to impress. Their breakfast was a delight each morning, a substantial spread with hot specialties to order including Caribbean favorites like johnny cakes + saltfish or veritable vacation food like thick cut French toast. For dinner, Restaurant 750 serves lovely cuisine on the deck, while Indigo serves up dinner in a more casual setting. The pièce de résistance though is Mill Privée, an exclusive dining experience set in an old converted sugar mill. During our dinner there, it was just the two of us taken care of by a dedicated waitress.
