HOTEL INSIDER: A Stay at D&D Brewery, Honduras
Equal parts lodge, restaurant, brewery and tour outfitter, the team at D&D Brewery has set out on a mission to help visitors uncover ‘the real Honduras’. Located near the banks of Lago de Yojoa, D&D welcomes travelers looking for an off-the-beaten path experience that hinges on authenticity.
DESTINATION: HONDURAS ??
On the banks of Lake Yojoa in the middle of dense wooded forest sits D&D Brewery, a place found by its coordinates, not by its address. Long considered one of the least developed and unstable countries in Central America, Honduras is a country that’s not yet found its stride in developing its tourism product. For those looking for a raw and authentic experience, Honduras has it in spades – research and responsibility required.
D&D Brewery is about experiential travel. Beyond the lodge, dining + brewery aspect, the organization has a separate arm, D&D Adventures, that focuses on getting travelers to immerse themselves in Honduran culture through unique experiences. Go birdwatching on the lake, hike through the Taulabe Caves for a spelunking adventure, or choose from a host of other adventures that suit your travel style. At the lodge, expect a communal feel that’s typical of a hostel environment with a range of interesting travelers, plus individual cottages that are well-appointed for around $40/day. We opted for the private cottages but for those looking for something even more budget friendly, mixed dorms are available as well.
Beer lovers will be excited by the number of local and international brews on offer, from traditional to fruit-infused, perfect for afternoon lazing or enjoying late night by the bonfire. You’d be forgiven for expecting sub-par food from a hostel in the middle of the Honduran jungle but D&D surprises there, too. Portions are hearty, affordable, and surprisingly great. Generally speaking, expect to be dining on property for most meals as options nearby are non-existent.
