Welcome, Kaia πŸ’•

Happy 2023 from Our Family of 3

It’s a funny thing, giving birth. Everyone tells you it’s like nothing you’ve ever experienced, that it’ll bring on a whole new type of love, and that each birth experience is unique. All of that is true. It’s like an invisible portal we’re passing through and delivery, particularly of our first child, is where we straddle that line as our former selves and our future selves. As first-time parents, the world as we know it changes in a moment. It’s a beautiful and transformative thing watching life enter the world, if not a bit out of body.

On January 2, 2023Β at 3:00PM, Kaia Grace Kircher entered the world at Mater Dei Hospital in Malta, delivered by our incredible midwife, Emily. At 19.5″ and 7 lb. 10.5 oz, she joined us bright-eyed and alert with a full head of hair and a healthy set of lungs. I’ll share my full birth story at some point, including more on why we chose Malta as her place of birth and why we are beyondΒ happy with that decision, but for now suffice it to say that I will always look back on our experience with a full heart and so much positivity.

Kaia,Β a name we’ve long loved, has meaning connected with the sea, fitting for an island child born in the Mediterranean and slated to live life part-time in the Caribbean. A name with Estonian roots, it has the most perfect connection to the place that was integral in her being with us today.Β Grace,Β my mother’s name, is an homage to her connection to Malta. In my mom’s lineage, I’m the first generation to be born outside of Malta. Kaia brings our connection back around to the place that makes up a huge portion of my cultural heritage and allows us to always keep a connection to our ancestral history in the Mediterranean.

Kaia joins the world 🌎

We’re now one week into parenthood and settling into life with a newborn; overwhelmed with happiness and emotion, bleary-eyed, and taking in every moment of getting to know our new arrival.

Kaia, there’s a whole world of adventure awaiting you. πŸ’•
